British comedy shows were recently voted as firm favourites by the 13,500 people surveyed by LoveFilm, the film subscription service. Coming in at number one as an all time favourite was Blackadder, starring Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson as his hapless sidekick. Fawlty Towers was voted in second place by respondents while Father Ted secured third place in the survey. Only Fools and Horses, starring David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst was voted as the fourth favourite TV show.

The editor of LoveFilm, Helen Cowley said:

“It’s great to see some quality British drama making an appearance. With comedy featuring heavily in the top ten, the results reflect the very British dry sense of humour.”

Indeed, the old British comedy classics remain in the hearts of people everywhere, with themed evenings becoming increasingly popular, especially Fawlty Towers. Dinner shows are now a firm favourite for celebrations, including weddings and birthdays.

Other TV shows voted for in the top ten include Dr Who, another firmly established TV show, Sherlock and Have I Got News For You. The Inbetweeners, a comedy show aimed at teenagers only reached ninth place, while Top Gear came in tenth position. Blackadder, Fawlty Towers and Father Ted were voted as the best TV shows of all time. All three were based around a main character who had a comedy sidekick. Although the shows were created many years earlier, they remain in the hearts of the British public as much respected comedy shows.
